Both men wept and prayed over the city, inspected its brokenness by night along the Kidron, faced the same trio of mocking and murderous enemies, refused to “come down” from their great work, and completed a protective wall—Nehemiah’s in fifty-two days, Christ’s at the cross. As cupbearer, Nehemiah foreshadows the One who drank the cup of the new covenant; the finished wall of salvation points to “It is finished,” Pentecost, the renewal of the covenant written on hearts, and the second advent when the true High Priest will purge the temple and restore all things.
