[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Description: This series of three talks relates the history of the Great Awakening in the early 19th century in the USA which impacted the life of the founder of the Christadelphians, Dr John Thomas, who had experienced a life changing sea journey to New York from England. The Reformation had rekindled an interest in the Bible and the original beliefs as taught by the Apostles. Having been baptised into the Campbellite movement created by its leader Alexander Campbell, Dr Thomas later realised some of their beliefs were not consistent with scripture. Writing in his magazine Herald of the Future Age in 1847 he made a formal statement of his beliefs. Returning to the UK in 1848 he attracted a large number of people to a series of talks after which he wrote his first book, Elpis Israel. He then returned to the USA and preached for the next ten years. The name Christadelphian meaning Brethren in Christ was chosen in 1864 during the Civil War to allow the members to register as conscientious objectors.
